If we’re honest, each of us has to admit that we want to claim at least partial responsibility for our salvation.I can attest that I like to think that the Lord accepts me on the basis of all the ministry I’ve done supposedly in His Name. At the very least, didn’t He save me because I chose to believe in Him?
Surely Jesus saves the righteous. Even if we accept the doctrine of election, we believe that He elects those who do something to attract His attention. We have tremendous difficulty with the idea that we contribute absolutely nothing to our salvation.
But, because we were spiritually dead until God raised us to life in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:1-10), we must look exclusively to Him as our Savior. Praise the Lord that His blood has washed away the stain of sin that I never could have atoned for by my own efforts! Today’s hymn celebrates this work of grace.
