Yoga: Don’t Even Consider It

Christian Yoga

To my knowledge, “Christian” yoga hasn’t been in the news lately. Bloggers in Reformed circles have been riding other bandwagons. Understandably so. A lot is going on both inside and outside the visible church, and all that noise causes the topic of yoga to fade into the background.

I’d love to think that the current silence about Christians practicing yoga indicates that the fad has ended and everyone has repented. I noticed something a friend posted on Facebook recently that pretty much dashed such hopes. If anything, the silence probably means that most professing Christians no longer see a contradiction between yoga and faithfulness to Scripture.

Please let me be wrong!

You may wonder why I’m so concerned about Christians practicing yoga. After all, so many health care professionals recommend it for maintaining flexibility and relieving stress. If prestigious hospitals like Massachusetts General Hospital use yoga to treat cancer patients, it gets difficult to think that anything is wrong with it.

But fidelity to the Lord demands that we recognize yoga as a specifically Hindu practice. The west can minimize or deny this connection all it wants, but those minimizations and denials won’t change the truth.

I’ve written several articles on yoga,  and I’ve mentioned it in other articles.  You can find  the entire collection here. I’d particularly like you to read A Christian Position On Yoga, which documents its unbreakable ties to Hindu worship.

Whether it’s your intention or not, if you do yoga, you’re inadvertently expressing worship of the demons who claim to be Hindu deities. And as a Christian, you are commanded not to partake of demonic worship.

14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread. 18 Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar? 19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. 22 Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? ~~1 Corinthians 10:14-22 (ESV)

Perhaps the absence of articles warning against yoga has lulled you into thinking that you can benefit from the exercise without getting ensnared in the meditation part. If so, I plead with you to research yoga. After reading up on it, I firmly believe that you’ll realize that yoga is something no Christian should consider.

    • Your assertion regarding the alleged benefits of meditation and yoga can be argued, although this Comments Section isn’t the appropriate place for that. I will, however, insist that Christians must never adopt spiritual practices outside of those that God lays out in His Word. I’ve written several articles on this blog explaining why yoga contradicts Scripture. I pray you’ll read them with a Biblical mind.
