Limited On Earth, Unlimited In Heavenly Realms

Floating BalloonLife has definitely not been fun as John and I face the increasing limitations of a) being over 60, b) being severely disabled, c) uncooperative finances and d) living in a culture that grows more hostile to the Gospel by the day.

The first two circumstances, as you might expect, overlap. John’s been struggling with health issues common to Polio survivors, causing us to wonder if our day trips to Boston have come to an end. Despite significant recovery from the fractures that hospitalized me in December, I still need to go to bed at 6:30, thus shortening the time I can spend on my computer by 90 minutes a day. We feel these restrictions profoundly, and we mourn over the losses they generate.

As John’s opportunities to work online shrink and his stamina diminishes, grocery prices rise.  We’ve had to cut my allowance for personal spending, and I’m using more of it to cover household expenses. Again, trips to Boston (even if John’s health improves) won’t be as frequent — transportation costs money.

And it’s only a matter of time before Facebook and Twitter ban me from promoting The Outspoken TULIP on their platforms. I don’t know how severely the progressives in Washington D.C. will limit religious freedom for Christians, but it doesn’t take a genius to see that our government won’t tolerate Biblical Christians much longer. Those of us who won’t compromise truth can expect persecution and suffering.

In the midst of all these limitations, the Lord reminds me of the unlimited riches that are mine in Christ.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. ~~Ephesians 1:3-10 (ESV)

Read that passage again, slowly and carefully. Let the Father’s love and generosity thrill you as you think about all He has lavished on you. These amazing blessings of adoption, redemption, forgiveness and grace have no limit and can’t be taken away from us!

Earthly life will always limit us because everything about it perishes. The limitations encroaching on me and John, though they fill us with grief, also fill us with hope and joy as we eagerly anticipate the fullness of time when Jesus takes us to our eternal home. There we will experience unlimited access to Him, basking forever in His presence.
