It jarred me a bit to see Beth Moore described as a minister of the Gospel. It probably shouldn’t have, given the powerful deception that engulfs her followers. As far as they can tell, Moore indeed represents a type of gospel that sounds pretty Biblical.
As I reflect on the idea of Beth Moore being a minister of the Gospel, my initial laughter gives way to sadness and concern. I begin wondering how well evangelicals at large really understand the Gospel. Interestingly, her newly refurbished website offers no actual Gospel presentation beyond a surface level Peace With God page that waters things down considerably. It reminds me of the impotent gospel that Rick Warren gave in The Purpose Driven Life.
But the Gospel of the Bible exudes real power. I’m currently reading Romans in my personal time with the Lord, and I’ve been amazed that Paul spends the bulk of his epistle hammering away at human sinfulness. As he does so, he uses his pictures of our depravity as a reason to marvel at God’s inexplicable grace in taking the wrath of God as a substitute for those who believe on Him.
Romans carefully demonstrates why we need a Savior. Regretfully, time doesn’t allow me to walk you through Paul’s argument in detail, but let me give you a small sample of his Gospel presentation:
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. ~~Romans 3:21-26 (ESV)
Just prior to this passage, Paul quoted several Old Testament Scriptures to show that none of us merits God’s favor. Because of human obstinacy against God, Jesus shed His innocent blood in order to satisfy God’s righteous wrath.
Other passages in Romans go on to speak of Christ’s resurrection, which confirms that the Father accepted His sacrifice on behalf of those who believe in Him. Search The Outspoken TULIP for my Bible Studies on 1 Corinthians 15 and the significance of Christ’s resurrection to round out your understanding of the Gospel.
I pray that one day Beth Moore actually will be a minister of the Gospel. At this writing, however, it saddens me to say that her gospel deviates from the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May this post remind you of the Biblical Gospel.
